dwillow2.jpg (98684 bytes) Information on Diamond Willow products crafted by remote Northern Canada First Nations Communities.
ws-1.jpg (19066 bytes)

These walking sticks are made by residents of remote First Nations communities in northern Manitoba, as part of a unique economic development project designed to provide entrepreneurial skill training which is aligned with the culture, history and aspirations of the community.  Diamond Willow is used because of its unique characteristics - white creamy sapwood, interspersed with "diamonds" of rougher, darker heartwood. Lightweight, yet remarkably strong, Diamond Willow is one of the most desirable woods for walking sticks. Diamond willow grows in abundance in the boreal forest of northern Manitoba.  Tamarack makes an excellent walking stick. Tamarack is a unique hardwood tree in that, during the spring and summer it looks like an evergreen, but the needles change to a bright golden, yellow in the fall and are shed. The tree is also unique in that as it grows it "twists," so that when the bark is removed, the tree bears an eerie resemblance to a unicorn horn.  Price: Diamond Willow walking stick (finished): U.S. $50Tamarack walking stick (carved and finished) U.S. $65.
